Safe arrival..

I’ve arrived safely in Phnom Penh yesterday and am staying in the Methodist School grounds at Toul Kork with my kind hosts – Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Yeo. Thank God for the smooth journey – our flight arrived on time, and David and I were warmly greeted by 2 staff workers from the Cambodia Campus Crusade for Christ – Khay and Chenda at the airport. Will probably be meeting them for dinner tomorrow.

First impressions – hot & dusty! Not too good for my sensitive nose but will have to put up with it. Otherwise, traveling down the streets of Phnom Penh in a van was rather daunting as I couldn’t quite make sense of the traffic system here! Vans, cars and motorbikes would just weave in and out from left right center.. rather chaotic by my standards.. but to the locals, there must be some kind of order amidst the chaos since everyone seems to know what to do!

Mr. Yeo (the principal of the Methodist school) presented some options for me to help out in the school. Contrary to my initial expectation of teaching English, there wasn’t really a need for that as all the classes had existing teachers. The options are:
  1. Data entry and maybe some troubleshooting with some database program that he is setting up
  2. Help to sort out the library books into a systematic catalogue
  3. Help the English teachers here and there – but probably not doing the main teaching

Option 1 seemed to appeal to me most, though it was definitely far from what I had imagined doing during my one month here. I could almost picture myself writing a little macro (program in Microsoft Excel) already.. haha.. ok, I think I must be missing my job! =)

I could also potentially do all three options, but will see how things go before deciding. Option 3 would give me direct contact with the school kids, and also opportunity to sow into their lives.

The weekend’s looking good cos will be heading down to Kampong Som where the beaches and seafood are! Yum! Look out for the pics later!

You are having Excel withdrawal symptoms! Haha... Glad you've arrived safely, and that you're having a good experience there. Take care of yourself. :)
