Some random pics...

This was taken on the last night of the OCF Murdoch Local Committee (LC) Retreat. Having gourmet pizzas at.. I can't remember the name of the place now. Hahaa.. Those two pizzas are DESSERT pizzas.. Pecan and Mud chocolate or something like that.. oOooooo.. yum..! This pic is gonna feature in my next newsletter as well! Haha..

My birthday dinner at Matsuri Japanese Restaurant. Yummm... sashimi...

Subi Bible Study Group. A "surprise" birthday song & "cake" (its actually just fruits in the tupperware.. but looks like a fruit cake from afar.. hehee..) for Soong Peng! This will feature in my newsletter too!

That's it for now.. I really should be studying!

one more to go!

Yay! Just finished my New Testament exam... left 15 minutes earlier too because I had already finished writing what I had prepared to write. Gotta prepare for my next and last paper tomorrow - Old Testament! Aiks!

Can't wait to finish the next exam so I can watch Anne of Green Gables.. hehehe.. love it love it love it!

Geez.. its still sooooo hot here... ahhhh.. dreaming of a jacuzzi..

Glad I'm indoors!

Hot hot hot! Max 38 degrees in Perth today. WOooo!
One good thing - my laundry is sure to dry in no time. Yaay!
Oh another good thing - its just too hot to sleep on my bed in the daytime.. so there is less incentive to sleep and more to stay awake to study! .. that's if I don't keep getting distracted by everything else... like blogging.. DOPE!

Yaay.. ! I finished the 5 questions I was supposed to do. Haha.. I'm ready for a night of dancing!! =P

If I don't... then...

oh boy.. i'm soooo slack!! Slept half the day away yesterday, and for the hours when I was awake, basically did nothing productive!

My exam paper is still half empty, and I still can't get the motivation I need.. haiyahh.. keep giving the excuse that I worked so hard during the semester, and now I'm just recovering.. haha.. yeah right, more like hibernating than recovering..!

well, here's my resolution for the day: to finish 5 short answer questions to my Old Testament exam before 5pm, otherwise I cannot watch "So You Think You Can Dance" tonight. Ah!!

So cruel!!!

Aust idol & flies...

Yaaaayy....!! Finally Marty Simpson is out of Aust Idol!! Just can't understand how he's lasted this long... "outliving" Ben McKenzie & Tarisai Vushe! Like Dicko said, he's "as resilient as a cockroach"!

Thoroughly enjoyed Guy Sebastian's performance last night. Phoo! If the final 3 can pull half of what he did, they'd get a touchdown for sure!

Its the time of the year when the people here in Perth get friendly. You can barely walk down the street without seeing someone waving.. ;) .. waving the flies away that is... hahaa.. yes its fly season.. ah!!

Hmm.. need to be cautious now.. can't laugh too much else I'd be having some fly for dessert!

a day's work

Tiring day...

Put in the finishing touches to the Bible study on Esther 6 which I'm rostered to lead tomorrow at my Subi BS group. I'm really loving the book of Esther... Having done 1 assignment, 1 sermon and BS on the 1st 5 chapters so far, I realise there is just HEAPS to learn from it.

Although the whole book does not mention the word 'God', the book is just dripping with God' s fingerprints of providence. It really is encouraging to be reminded that God continues to work despite obvious disaster (e.g. the announcement of the annihilation of the Jews), and how God uses the most ordinary of people to work for his purposes (e.g. Esther, before made queen, was merely an orphaned, Jewish girl.. all 3 not-so-favourable characteristics in a foreign land). Not to mention the encouragement (when applied to OCF) that God can raise up others to do his work when there seems to be no one to continue the leadership (cf Esther 4: 14).

Anyway....

Met up with 2 girls at Murdoch Uni to catch up.. its great to just be able to chat and then pray together. I reckon I'd do more of this next year too.. hopefully it won't be just empty resolutions!

OCF Committee meeting has been cancelled tonight, which means I get to catch Guy Sebastian performing in the Aust Idol results show tonight! Whooopieee! Providence! =P Oops.. okok, bad example.. =P

I wonder how some of my Canberran friends are doing.. haven't called them for a while.. hmm...

Meaningful prezzies!

Semester at Bible College is over! Exams are up in two weeks, but am not too stressed about that cos I am given the exam questions beforehand! Muahahahaa...

Actually, its making me even slacker (is there such a word?!). Just can't get the discipline to sit down and write out the answers to the questions.. haiyah!!!

Anyway, I found this really cool way of giving presents that are meaningful. You know how we often give people gifts that they don't really need and it just ends up as clutter in their house? Well, TEAR Australia came up with "Useful Gifts" - buying a "gift" that will go to helping the poor around the world.

What happens is that if say you buy a "goat" which costs $X -> this $X will go as a tax-deductible donation to one of their partner organisations in some poor country, which will use that $ to provide a goat for the family taking part in their projects etc. What the buyer will receive is a GIFT CARD with some information about the gift, which you can then send to the person you want to give the gift to.

How cool is that?!

Check it out at:
www.usefulgifts.org

and make giving gifts a meaningful (& not wasteful) thing this Christmas!!

Matt 25:37-40:

"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

1 blue bottle left!

Well well well.. what a hectic week that has passed!

1 workshop, 3 assignments, 1 tutorial presentation, and 1 Discovery group to lead! Phew! Thank God I'm still sane!

Explains why I slept so much whole day yesterday.. didn't get up till almost 10am, went back to sleep slightly after breakfast, and after lunch, and went to bed at 10:30pm! hahaa... how i love just not needing to do anything but relax!

I must confess that I skipped one 3-hour lecture this week - Old Testament unit on Job & Ecclesiastes.. felt bad, but was struggling to finish up my 3000 word essay.. which I managed to pull through with only 2600 words. Oh well..

Workshop for the OCF local committee didn't go as well as wanted to, was rather nervous and ranted off at top speed!

Tutorial presentation - was on the topic of "feminist theology".. really interesting though.. key lesson learnt is that we can be so influenced by our culture, tradition, even our gender in the way we theologise about things.. so that's something we all need to be careful when we read the Bible! Sure got me thinking about "hmm.. is God really male?" .. what do YOU think?

Discovery Group - was ask to do it for the "Combined WA Bible Study" where all 3 centres came together. Didn't know any of the members of that group cos they were all from OCF Curtin, so thought it might be a good idea to do "The Bible Overview" presentation. Thought it went alright, as I had prepared & expected, but got feedback that while it was good, it was still boring, cos it doesn't really excite people, especially the non-Christians.

Hmm.. been chewing on that feedback for 2 days now.. and will have to chew on it somemore! Anyway, don't think I can solve that in a jiffy, but will definitely be thinking & praying about it more!

Oh yes, what happened to my sermon? It was on the book of Esther, and it was for my "Preaching to Dummies" class. Generally got good feedback, with the constructive criticism being "Stay away from your notes!" Yeah, I tend to keep looking at my notes when I'm nervous.. but I suppose with more practice, I should be able to steer clear of them and be more natural! But being able to just practise giving a sermon in front of class gave me some confidence, especially in front of an Aussie audience! hahaa...

Anyway, there was a part where I used some Cantonese phrases, and that had a double effect! I said "Sei Lah! Sei Lah!", meaning "Die, I'm going to Die" (in the context of the expression Asian students usually use when they're stressed with 4 assignments due in a week) .... Firstly, one of the ladies had worked in Hong Kong for 10 years, and she knew exactly what I was saying! So she laughed soOooo loud cos it reminded her of the students who had stayed in the unit below hers!

Secondly, for those who didn't understand, it was like an "attention grabber".. cos they were like going.. "WHAT?!" and all paid attention to listen to my explanation after that. Hahaha.. coolz... looks like slipping in some words from a different language can be a potentially helpful tactic!!

OK, back to my last and final assignment!!! Onward Christian Soldier!!

Newsletter #1

My first newsletter.. a summary of what you would have read in my blog so far.. (I think!). If you want to receive my future newsletters through e-mail, please let me know!
===========================================
Dear friends,

This is my first newsletter and I have heaps to tell you! It has been 4 months since my information session and commissioning in KL, arriving in Perth, studying at Bible College and getting into the swing of the OCF WA traineeship. It sure has been both exciting and exhausting!

Partnership with home church

It was great to have Pastor Andrew Tan, the senior pastor of my church (KL Wesley Methodist Church) to commission me for my stint here in Perth. It really is a comfort to know that my church is partnering me in my journey here and that I am not alone! The missions committee has also generously contributed a lump sum of money. Praise God for a supportive church back home!

Prayer during my commissioning

Settling down in Perth

Coming back to Australia hasn’t been TOO hard! Perth is a lovely city and the people here are friendly. Plus I’ve got my own car to move around, what more can you ask for?

More news (and pictures!) of my kind landlords and housemates, Jonathan and Soong Leng in a later issue!

Bible College – Baptist Theological College

I love every minute of Bible College! The college’s motto is “Think, Do, Become” – Think what you’ve never thought, Do what you’ve never done, Become who you’ve never been. Pretty stimulating don’t you think?

There is a good mix of “theory” (e.g. lectures and assignments) and “practical” stuff to learn (my “Preaching for Dummies” class is absolutely fantastic!) to integrate our heads, hearts and hands. Every Wednesday, we have a time devoted to accountability groups, practical ministry, community worship and lunch (which we take turns cooking in groups). I’m due to give a sermon at class next week, so though I’m having the jitter bugs, I’m also really looking forward to it!

A prayer point would be – that I make good friends at College! I’m slowly getting to know the students and building relationships with them, so that’s still in progress! Really appreciate the encouragement and constructive criticism that I can receive from both lecturers and students. After all, all candy-floss and no meat make one still hungry!

WA Winter Camp 2007

My first assignment with OCF was to attend the 5D4N Winter Camp, organised by the 3 OCF centres. It was a ball of a time, with a good turnout, heaps of fun as well as godly teaching. Talent night has always been hilarious, and this year was no exception. Just shows how Uni students are wired by God – creatively crazy! The theme was “God’s Will” with the theme verse being Proverbs 16:9 "In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps."

Much to my delight, I had a surprise task awaiting me – to help out in the special group for the non-Christian campers (a fantastic FOUR of them – all girls)! The group was led by an OCFer, while I was more an assistant to her. I was really excited to see how some of the girls began with zero knowledge of Christianity and ended up hearing the gospel about Jesus’ rescue mission for humanity. Thank God for the opportunity to be able to share the gospel with them!

Ministry with OCF – OCF Murdoch

I’ve been assigned to work specifically with one OCF centre out of the three – OCF Murdoch. For the first 2 months, I spent most of my time getting to know the students and easing in to the way things are done around here. Specifically, I attended their committee meetings, prayer meetings, Bible study leaders meetings, Friday night meetings… Phew! Perhaps one too many meetings!

Now that they’re more comfortable with me (and vice versa!), I have also started discipling 2 girls, meeting them once a week/fortnight to go through the OCF WA discipleship materials. I really love this part of the job, meeting up one-on-one with people and just sharing life with one another, whilst building them up towards Christ-like maturity! I reckon that’s how the Kingdom of God is built – one individual at a time!

I also meet up regularly with my mentors which I’ll tell you more about in my next newsletters!

Returnees and Graduates’ Workshop

I finally conducted my first workshop (*Gasp*)! Well, I wasn’t alone as I had a lot of help from Lisa, our other trainee and David Graieg, an ex-OCFer. It was a cosy nine of us altogether, so it made it easier on my nerves since it was a small group. Between the three of us, we shared on topics such as preparing to go home/graduate, our own experience as a returnee/graduate, the Australian work culture, and the taboo topic of money, money, money! We ended the session by getting the students to write a letter to God about their spiritual goals for the next 5 years, seal it, address it to themselves, and we will arrange for it to be sent to their homes when they least expect to receive them!

So what else have I been up to?

Hmm… what other exciting thing have I been up to? Oh I just celebrated my birthday not too long ago! J Thank God for 25 years of life on this earth! Had a meaningful and restful time reflecting and praying and planning by the little pond in Piney Lakes Reserve nearby. Just hit me that it all seems rather surreal that I’m actually here in Perth doing this traineeship! Was reflecting on my journey since my first conviction in December 2005 and just utterly amazed at how God had made it possible leading up to this!

Tough lessons learnt

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), it has not been all a bed of roses so far. I can see the hand of God truly working and teaching me some difficult lessons of humility, trust and dependence: from learning to let go of financial worries, to struggling with autonomy, to eating some nasty-tasting humble pie. But in all, God is to be glorified.

Praise and Thanksgiving points:

  1. Thank God for His financial provision so far! I cannot stress how much this has stretched my trust and faith in Him.
  2. Thank God for Lisa who has been of tremendous help assisting me into the swing of things and getting my expectations right.
  3. Thank God for a time of solitude during my birthday!
  4. Praise God for the work that He is doing in me through my successes as well as failures.

Prayer points:

  1. For Lisa as she finishes her stint end of this year! Please pray as she thinks and plans for her future journey from here.
  2. For continual guidance in the areas God wants me to work on. May my ideas and desires be submitted unto His authority.
  3. For continual sustenance for the remaining 4 weeks of my Bible College semester. 5 assignments down, 5 more to go. Ah!
  4. That I will continue to find time to spend with God amidst the busyness of studies and work!

Past week...

Last week was busy busy busy! Finally nailed down my Ethics assignment on the environment. Yes, Christians SHOULD Be GREEN! Why? Because:
1. this earth is not ours, it belongs to God
2. God has given us responsibility to care for it
3. God values creation - which can be seen in His redemption of it through Christ!

Anyway, did a workshop for the Returnees & Graduates on Saturday, together with Lisa and Dave Graieg. Then, drove to Maida Vale (half hour's drive away from where I stay) to the Murdoch Local Committee (LC) Retreat. So spent the rest of Sat and Sun there, listening (& occasionally participating) in with the planning & stuff for next year!

Phew! Tired tired tired.. but it was good. Study break this week, but have to work on ... 4 essays, 1 sermon, and 1 LC training workshop thingo within 2 weeks! Therefore... to gear me up for it...

I am having a personal Retreat tomorrow! Hahaha.. since the LC's get their retreats, why not me? So will be spending half my time in the lounge room in my house (I love the cushiony chairs!), and the other half (or maybe just one hour) at Piney Lakes - some Park with a lake...

Pray that it'd be a meaningful time spent reflecting and praying and planning!

life lessons.. still tough..

Its been a tough but humbling week. Can't share more details but suffice to say that God is teaching me to "wash one another's feet", even when they don't want it washed!

Whatever happened this week highlighted to me the extent of Jesus' love for us, that while we were still sinners, his enemies, when we didn't want him in our lives... he served and died for us.

I can't say that I've totally come out of what upset me recently, but I know I've moved on a little bit. It'd be a long journey but may God continue to lead me step by step!

===================================================================
Otherwise...

I'm very happy with the grades for my first two assignments! Praise God!

Currently working on an essay: "Should Christians be Green?"... (ooo that's the colour of my blog background too.. haha..)... anyway feel like I'm losing momentum already.. I reckon having to write one essay a week is a wee bit too much for me! And I'm just taking the normal load of 4 units! Ah!

Jonathan & Soong Leng will be away later part of the week. Will be inviting some girls over for a small dinner gathering.. pray that I don't burn my cooking!

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

life lessons.. tough...

Patience & humility.. I reckon that's what God is trying to teach me now.. cos I'm rather frustrated & annoyed by something that happened.. God help me!

discipline - to stop working!

My eyes feel like they're about to pop out soon. Its almost 1 am and I'm rushing for my next book review due on Thursday. Why the rush when there's another 3 days to work on it? Because there are more assignments to conquer! Not to mention having to prepare for the returnees' workshop held next week and meeting up with Elaine on Tuesday for discipleship! And a full day at college on Wednesday!

Oh for the life of my eyes I think I just need to hit the sack now. One just needs to learn how to "give up" when its appropriate to!

So here's to all you hard workers who don't know when to stop working - Stop when your body tells you to! (Not to mention when your wife/friend/family tells you to too!)

Prayer.. do I really believe in its power?

My Bible reading today is from Luke 7:1-10, the story about the centurion whose faith surprised Jesus. He believed that Jesus could heal his servant who was dying, even without stepping foot into his house. "...say the word, and my servant will be healed."

Essentially, this man believed that Jesus was a man of authority - authority over even sickness & death. Jesus in turn was "amazed at him... he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

I was challenged by this story -
  1. Jesus had the authority & power to act.
  2. It showed me the kind of faith the centurion had.
  3. (Putting 1 & 2 together), it showed me the kind of faith I had, or lack thereof, that Jesus had the authority & power to act!
Reflecting on my own prayer life lately - although I have been praying and having regular prayer times... and yes, I do have some quality time with God during those times.. but.. I realised, that something was still amiss. I know I should pray, and I have been praying.. but was I really convinced that God was going to work through those prayers? Or was I praying because I knew it was the right thing to do, and that God may work through them?

To illustrate one of my recent struggles: Say I'm following up with one of the girls. Now my preference would be to meet up every week if possible - and the thought of meeting up a fortnight causes me to be a little uneasy. I have difficulty trusting that they will be alright during the two weeks that we don't meet... Although I pray for them, I have difficulty just letting go & trusting that God will continue to work in them in the meantime... In a sense, I pray but I don't know whether I could really trust that things will go well??

Quite arrogant isn't it? To think that I'm the one making the difference & not merely the tool in which God uses?!

So its quite a knife in the heart.. but this quote from the Encounter with God materials was really helpful in putting the finger on my issue:

Faith must be based on an understanding of Jesus' authority if it is to have any meaning. Are our prayers based on the vague conviction that God, acting in and through Jesus, might be able to do something, or are they based on the conviction that we are coming to the King of the Universe who has ultimate authority over all things? This is not to say that we will always get what we ask, for God has authority over us too, but it is to say that we can afford to come and make our requests in the total conviction that he has the power to act.

.... So what's going to change? Now I can pray with more confidence, not in my own feeble prayers... but in the God who has the power and authority to answer them!

Amazing Generosity....!

Just found out that someone anonymously donated AUD$2000 to my work here in OCF!
Wow..! Praise God!

If you are the one, could you just please drop me a line so that I can personally thank you? You cannot imagine how grateful I am!
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

And yes, THANK YOU to ALL OF YOU who have pledged and contributed diligently to my needs here too! No amount is too small in God's eyes, and in mine too! Really really appreciate the sacrifices that you have made too so that I may have this privilege to serve in OCF WA.

And THANK YOU to all who have diligently PRAYed for me too. God is taking good care of me, and I know He will continue to equip and empower me for His work!

All Praise and Glory to God my Provider!

prayer meet..

Praise God! I can finally put the book review aside. My lecturer is happy with it! Phew!!
Now... to the next assignment on the book of Jeremiah... Here we go again!!

===================================================================
Had an enjoyable time at the Murdoch prayer meet just now. It was a potbless dinner, but I only joined them for the prayer part. Always encouraging to carry each others' burdens. Pray that this prayer meeting will grow!

done done done..?

Finally my book review is done! Thank God!! Cross my fingers that it meets the requirement! Going to show it to my lecturer later... Argh!!! I don't want to rework it!!!

=====================================================================
On a more interesting note, I just finished my mentoring course last night. Its been an awesome 6 weeks learning about the different skills in this area. I really appreciate the times when we're "forced" to mentor one another during the course, getting feedback and observing how others do it. I'm really encouraged to see myself grow in using those relational skills as well, though I still need lots of practice! Well I suppose its just like driving a car. You need to do it to learn it! So I'll just have to do it! So who wants to sign up as my guinea pig? =P

finish line in sight!

Almost there.. almost there.. just need another 400 words.. someone give me some inspiration with this book review!!

Eek..!!

Sunday service

Good sermon today by Graham - Psalm 8, my favourite Psalm! Good reminder of our significance to the Creator of the universe, despite how small we may feel! We are indeed greatly loved!

1 O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
above the heavens.

2 From the lips of children and infants
you have ordained praise
because of your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?

5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.

6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you put everything under his feet:

7 all flocks and herds,
and the beasts of the field,

8 the birds of the air,
and the fish of the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
